It's an interesting observation, and I'd love to hear your response. Thx!

missu asked: About this post: http://www.marco.org/980434663. you seem to not mention that Palm always had a touch screen, you just needed stylus. You also didn't mention that Samsung had a tablet, Samsung Q1. Back then, they were marketed as Ultra portable PCs. None the less, still a decent post. oh, that really wasn't a question so ... umm ... how is your day?

the case for switching to LED lightbulbs
superdoofus-stratodrive:
ok, here’s mr. facts:
> incandescent [icd]: $0.50/ea., 2000 hr life
> compact fluorescent [cf]: $3.00/ea., 10,000 hr life
> LED [led]: $10.00/ea., 100,000 hr life

considering a kWh cost of $0.15, 8.0 hours of usage/day, all lumen outputs equivalent to a 45W incandescent:
> icd (45W) = $19.80/yr
> cf (9W) = $3.96/yr

Yesterday afternoon when I landed, I didn’t even need my coat. In fact, I took it off because it was a whopping 43˚ above zero—a temperature I haven’t felt since literally late Sept or early Oct.
I can tell you’ve been in Alaska for a while because you specified “above zero”.
The UI has a good bit of new sexy to it.

Can’t wait to see the Apple table! It’s going to kick the Microsoft Surface’s ass.

Virtualized MySQL Faster
rentzsch:
I have an Xserve that’s still on 10.4. It runs a web app with a typical MySQL database backend. Both on metal.
This morning the DB got so slow that the app server started returning “timed out” error pages.
Ungood.
So I dumped the database, created a new Debian VMware instance and loaded up the data. I ssh port-forwarded metal’s 3306 to the new VM and restarted the...

From what I can tell, Tumblr, Facebook, and Twitpic all strip GPS data from uploaded images. This is true of both Tumblr thumbnails as well as high-res photos.
It’s not the services: it’s the iPhone.
Email an iPhone photo to yourself, or transfer it via USB with Image Capture, and see what EXIF data remains.

It’s an illusion. We’re not actually dry. Umbrellas don’t actually work.
disneyzane regarding stuff on steam-heat radiators:
Everyone rests stuff on their radiator like that, but I still feel that if I do it I will wake up to an inferno in my apartment.
It’s all on a wood shelf, and wood doesn’t conduct heat very well to the books. Additionally, wood doesn’t ignite unless it reaches at least 300°F (or closer to 400° if it’s in reasonable...

Folks with kids are rushing off for trick or treating. I’m all WTF cause it’s not freakin’ Halloween.
Welcome to Columbus, where trick-or-treating is always held on a Tuesday or Thursday before October 31, and always in a timespan that mostly happens before it actually gets dark outside.
A Visit to the Apple Store

I’ll be interested see reviews of the new Apple AirPort Extreme Base Station. (The Apple Store Short Pump doesn’t have any yet.) Apple claims:
Improvements in antenna design give you up to 50 percent better Wi-Fi performance and up to 25 percent better range than with the previous-generation AirPort Extreme Base Station.
I’m not geeky enough to understand all the technology behind Wi-Fi....

Tumblr appears to be stripping my Markdown headings of their HTML tags in the Dashboard. Why? I don’t know.
It always has. The Dashboard only allows a subset of tags to maintain security and consistent appearance. Currently it’s:
a, b, em, br, br, p, strong, i, ul, ol, li,
blockquote, del, strike, code, pre, sub, sup
Tags are occasionally added to the list and styled...

Curse you, Apple Store, for believing that I’m smart enough to know that the Apple TV doesn’t come with an HDMI cable.
Don’t buy retail. You’ll pay out the ass. Instead, go here, scroll to the big “28AWG HDMI 1.3a Category 2 Certified Male to Male Cables” section near the bottom, and pick your desired length or color. Here’s a basic 5-foot black one...

I disagree.
While I will concede that there are definitely going to be people that oppose Obama solely based on his skin tone, saying that the majority of his opposition is fueled by racism is dangerous. Its akin to saying that his predecessor’s opposition were all UnPatriotic.
